About the core

Molecular diagnostics

We test tissues, cells, feces and environmental samples for veterinary viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and reverse transcriptase-PCR (RT-PCR).

The Yale IACUC requires biological contaminant testing (BCT) of samples that are proposed to be inoculated into rodents prior to use. This service is free of charge to Yale investigators.

Sample submission

Samples should be collected using aseptic technique and stored at -70C until delivery to BML B33. The following sample types are accepted:

  • Cultured cells: 1,000,000 cells in a plastic tube with 1 ml of used media
  • Tumors or tissues: 100 mg
  • Feces: up to 6 mouse pellets per 1.5 ml tube
  • Environmental samples: up to 4 synthetic swabs in a 1.5 ml tube

Include a submission form containing a COA or PO # and contact information with your sample(s). Email Susan Compton for a submission form or to inquire about available assays.

Serological diagnostics

We test mouse and rat sera for rodent viruses and Mycoplasma pulmonis

Sample submission

Store samples at -20C until delivery to BML B33. The following sample quantities are requested. See table below for the number of tests involved in each type of request and, thus, the sample volume required.

  • For 1-5 tests: submit 50 ul of undiluted serum or 500 ul of serum diluted 1:10 in saline
  • For 6-12 tests: submit 100 ul of undiluted serum or 1 ml of serum diluted 1:10 in saline

Do not submit whole blood.

Include a submission form containing a COA or PO # and contact information with your sample(s). Email Susan Compton for a submission form or to inquire about available assays.
