Budgeting for NIH Data Management and Sharing

Summary: This memo summarizes the budgeting requirements of storing, managing and sharing data for grant proposals to NIH, effective January 25, 2023.  A two-page tip sheet is also attached. Please distribute to faculty and administrators with NIH grant funding and/or administrative responsibilities.

Dear Colleagues,

Beginning tomorrow, January 25, 2023, the National Institutes of Health will require all grant proposals to include a plan for storing, managing, and sharing data. Please refer to the NIH Funding Opportunity Announcements for necessary details that may be provided by program staff.
 
Costs associated with data management and sharing (DMS) are an allowable expense, should reflect the management and sharing plan to the extent possible, and should be included in the grant budget. We expect, for all grants, that the cost will not be zero dollars as there are always some expenses associated with the management, preservation, and sharing of data, as required by the NIH.  A tip sheet, available here and attached, may help you assess your data management costs.  
 
Please contact your program officer and the Institute or Center to which you are applying for additional information about the mandate and budgets.
