9-over-9 Program 2023-2024 Election Process
Announcing the 2023-24 election process for the “9-over-9” salary program, which allows participating faculty to charge up to 4.5 months of their salary to grants and contracts during the academic year, coincident with when the effort was devoted to the project.
Dear Colleagues,
This memo is to announce the 2023-24 election process for the “9-over-9” salary program, which allows participating faculty to charge up to 4.5 months of their salary to grants and contracts during the academic year, coincident with when the effort was devoted to the project. In addition, to more accurately reflect actual effort and obligations associated with sponsored research, faculty in this program who charge academic year effort to grants and contracts receive an equivalent amount transferred into a research account for their use.
The full details of this program can be found at the following link, and if you are contemplating participating in this program we encourage you to read it with great care: https://provost.yale.edu/policies/salary-grant-funds-9-over-9-plan. In addition, a document addressing frequently asked questions concerning the program can be accessed by clicking HERE or following the link at the end of this message.
If you expect to be able to commit at least one month of effort to a grant or contract during the 2023-24 academic year and would like to participate in the program, please fill out the 9 over 9 request form (also linked below) and submit to your business manager by May 12, 2023. Questions regarding the program may be addressed to lisa.dangelo@yale.edu.
Please note that participating faculty must elect this option on a yearly basis. If you are currently enrolled in the program and would like to continue next year, you must submit the request form to your business office by May 12th. If you do not submit the form, you will be unenrolled from the program effective July 1 and will not be able to commit effort to grants during the 2023-24 academic year.
There are several points to consider if you are contemplating participating in the program:
- Academic year effort and corresponding salary charged to sponsored projects during the academic year is separate and apart from the effort and associated salary charged during the summer months, commonly referred to as summer salary.
- It is important to understand that the academic year salary under this program is only paid during the nine-month academic year, and not spread out over 12 months as is normal practice. Therefore, if you participate you will not receive a paycheck during any summer month in which you do not charge at least some summer salary to an approved source of funds.
- For any summer month without a paycheck, any benefit costs in arrearage will be recovered from your next paycheck.
- If you plan to be on Leave Without Salary during the 2023-24 academic year, you are not eligible to participate in the program during the upcoming year.
Sincerely,
Michael C. Crair, PhD
Vice Provost for Research
