Take a class on glass

CHEM 565L (Introduction to Scientific Glassblowing) will be offered in the Fall 2026 term.

This course provides a basic introduction to the fabrication of scientific apparatus from glass. Topics covered include laboratory set-up, the fundamental skills and techniques of glassblowing, the operation of glass fabrication equipment, and requisite safety procedures. Emphasis is placed on manipulative skills and dexterity, as well as the basic tools, materials, and equipment found in a modern glassblowing facility. Students learn through formal and informal lectures, supplemented by extensive hands-on training in the methods of glass heating and manipulation. 

• CHEM 565L, Introduction to Scientific Glassblowing, is a 0.5-credit graduate-level course and cannot be used toward any degree requirement. 
• All students must have permission from their advisor to enroll.
• The class is limited to 5 students.

Enrollment

There are 2 sections offered this fall term.

• Section 01: Monday & Wednesday from 8:30 AM–11:00 AM.
• Section 02: Tuesday & Thursday from 8:30 AM–11:00 AM.

Declared Chemistry students (both graduate and undergraduates) will be able to sign up in person in the Glass Shop, SCL 14, on Monday, August 31, 2026.  

Remaining available seats are open to any Yale student, with in-person sign-up in SCL 14, beginning 8:00 AM, Tuesday, September 1.

First class for section 1 is Friday September 4.  First class for section 2 is Tuesday, September 8.

Once you are approved to be in the course and section by Daryl, you must register online through Yale Hub. 

This is an important step as this is the only way for it to appear on your transcript.

• You will receive an email when the instructor answers your permission request. Then complete your registration by going back into the registration system (through Yale Hub) and adding the course to your schedule. Be sure to click Submit to finish the process.

All class materials are provided. Students only need to be on time and wear proper laboratory attire.
