Don't blow? Tune to something other than a B flat? Don't care about all that
embouchure or reed or spit valve stuff? Used to watch longingly from the stands
as your high school marching band took the field, knowing you couldn't join because
you play a string instrument? Well, pine no more: there is a whole section in the
Yale Precision Marching Band just for you. Whether you play the violin, the viola,
the cello, like to rock out on the guitar or bass, or even noodle around on the
piano or harp, you have a place in the strings section.
Of all the sections in the band, it's the strings that epitomize the uniqueness,
musical variety and inclusive nature of the YPMB. Among the sea of shiny metal
winds and brass, we stand out every time we're on the field: the sight of orchestral
instruments never fails to draw comments from onlookers, and the guitars provide
Bowl-shaking sound with their rockin' amps. Sure, orchestras are great--but playing
strings in the YPMB is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The "traditional"
all-blowing-all-the-time marching bands don't know what they're missing.
