services & tools
research.yale.edu provides a number of services and tools to enhance the use of technology in teaching and research.
| storage and hosting |
Data storage services on research.yale.edu provide a flexible
solution for researchers and groups that plan to accumulate and publish large numbers of
files, data sets, and/or image collections. The costs for this service are well below
commodity pricing for equivalent services in the private sector. For more information on
storage availability and pricing, please refer to the account request page.
One of the primary goals of this service is to provide data storage and account management
tools that are currently not available on institutionally managed servers. At the same time,
it is realized that not every research group has the resources or local support necessary to
manage their own server. The storage services provided by research.yale.edu provide a secure,
scalable, and supported solution for collaborative work groups.

| collaborative tools |
The Internet is fueled by collaboration. This technology provides researchers at remote sites with the
ability to share data in real time. Subscribers of research.yale.edu can distribute and manage accounts
to allow collaborators, both within Yale and elsewhere, to transfer data to a central storage area where
it can be shared, distributed, and/or published directly to the web.
Subscribing partners of research.yale.edu can set different levels of permissions for their collaborators
based on needs. This solution is ideal for long term collaborations involving document or data sharing, or
for single use sessions when moving a large data file is critical.

programming tools |
Many different types of interactive applications such as on-line surveys, data collection forms,
and real-time analytical tools, can be developed with a Web interface. To accommodate the development
of unique applications, a range of common programming tools are available on research.yale.edu that
are not accessible on other institutional servers.
CGI scripting
Perl
PHP 4.0
C/C++
Python
Java servlet engine
MySQL and/or postgreSQL
At the basic level, these programming tools are offered as self-service applications. At this
level researchers will be performing their own programming or implementing stable code from another
outside source. The basic level of service included under a hosting contract does not provide support
for custom programming or the debugging of code.
