Research
Opportunities
Undergraduate
research internships in tropical silviculture:
Undergraduate interns assist PRORENA staff and graduate
students in a variety of plantation and ecological research
projects. Interns usually spend 70% of their time assisting
with ongoing research, and 30% of their time completing
an independent project. Interns are normally provided
with housing and research expenses. For more information
on 2004 undergraduate internships send a note of inquiry
to info@prorena.org.
Socio-Economic
impacts of reforestation projects:
A graduate student (Masters or Doctoral) is sought to
examine the relative socio-economic impacts of reforestation
projects as compared to intensive agriculture and cattle
ranching. Employment, employment stability, opportunities
for advancement, impacts on family life, and differential
impacts on men and women are among the issues of particular
interest. Partial funding is available. For more information
please send a note of inquiry to info@prorena.org.
Comparative
analysis of reforestation incentives:
Several Central American countries
have created reforestation incentive laws over the last
decade. Panama passed legislation in 1994 which created
significant tax relief for reforestation investments.
However, in 2002 this legislation was reversed, with all
tax relief to be phased out over a 5-year period. A graduate
student (Masters or Doctoral) is sought to conduct a comparative
analysis of the impact of this legislation on reforestation
efforts within each country, and to suggest incentive
structures most likely to promote widespread reforestation,
sound forest management, and participation by broad segments
of society. For more information
please send a note of inquiry to info@prorena.org.
