If you are writing your senior essay or other major research paper about 20th century New Haven history and are considering conducting oral history interviews, the New Haven Oral History Project wants to hear from you. We can help you with all aspects of your project, starting with the earliest planning stages. We can help you identify interviewees and devise interviewing strategies; provide recording equipment and proper legal release forms; archive your interviews; and generally help you conceptualize how to work with oral history.

Volunteer with the New Haven Oral History Project
The New Haven Oral History Project is an excellent volunteer opportunity for people interested in New Haven, oral history, community development, or service learning. All volunteers receive training in oral history theory and methodology. Volunteers have the chance to fully immerse themselves in all aspects of the Project.

The New Haven Oral History Project is based at Yale University and administered by the Yale University History Department. Support for the NHOHP comes from the Yale University President’s Office, the Yale University Library Manuscripts and Archives Division, and Yale’s History and Political Science Departments. Past supporters have included the Yale College Dean’s Office and the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven.

Preservation, Education, Community Building
The New Haven Oral History Project documents the oral history of New Haven, Connecticut. The NHOHP pursues three interrelated goals: preservation, education, and community building. Preservation involves building the New Haven Oral History Collection, a publicly-accessible archive of oral history about the city at the Yale University Library. We educate by teaching students to conduct the interviews, and bringing interviews into the classroom. Community building means putting our history to work in in public forums in our community, creating a common understanding of the past as the basis for a shared vision of the future.
