Sibusiso Sibisi

Recently appointed CSIR President and CEO Dr Sibusiso Sibisi takes up office at the CSIR on 1 January 2002. He previously held the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research and Innovation at the University of Cape Town.
Dr Sibisi is best-known in science circles for the role he played as chairperson of the National Advisory Council on Innovation (NACI), where he found himself in the exciting position of playing a central role in fostering an effective National System of Innovation in South Africa: spanning educational institutions, science councils and industry. A
Born in Mariannhill, KwaZulu-Natal, he completed a BSc (Hons) in Physics in London and later obtained a PhD from the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) from the Cambridge University in 1983. He was also a Fulbright Fellow at the California Institute of Technology in 1988 and returned to Cambridge in 1989 to assume a research position at DAMTP. On his return to South Africa in 1997, Dr Sibisi joined Plessey (SA) as Executive Director, tasked with research and development in telecommunication technologies. Shortly after the takeover of Plessey by Dimension Data, Sibisi joined the University of Cape Town as Deputy Vice-Chancellor. He has consulted for various industries, such as Glaxo-Wellcome, Fisons, Shell, Mobil and Pfizer, in areas ranging from pharmaceutical drug discovery to oil exploration, the deliverables being a variety of software solutions.
