Paul Barten
Associate Professor, Department of Natural Resources Conservation, University of Massachusetts

The key findings and recommendations of a recent (2006-08) National Research Council study - requested by the US Bureau of Reclamation and the US Forest Service and chaired by Prof. Barten - will be summarized and discussed. After a review and summary of the state of the science of forest hydrology, the committee developed a set of recommendations for scientists, managers, and communities which, taken together, can help to guide US forest and water resource policies and programs in the face of land use, population, and climate change.

Paul Barten is Associate Professor of Forest Resources at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He served on the faculty of Yale F&ES from 1988-97. He has served on three National Research Council committees: Review of the New York City Watershed Management Strategy (1998-2000), Conservation of Atlantic Salmon in Maine (2002-04), and Hydrologic Effects of Forest Management (2006-08). He is co-author, with Avril de la Cretaz, of "Land Use Effects on Streamflow and Water Quality in the Northeastern United States" (CRC Press, 2007). Dr. Barten earned an MS and PhD in forest hydrology and watershed management from the University of Minnesota and undergraduate degrees in forestry from SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry and the New York State Ranger School.
