In this course we will introduce two forest decision support systems with applications to forest management in Southern New England: the Landscape Management System and NED-2.

The Landscape Management System (LMS) is an evolving application designed to assist in landscape level analysis and planning of forest ecosystems by automating the tasks of stand projection, graphical and tabular summarization, stand visualization, and landscape visualization.

LMS is implemented as a Microsoft Windows application that coordinates the activities of other programs (growth models, visualization tools, etc.) that makeup the overall system. LMS is comprised of many separate programs that make growth estimates, produce graphical or tabular displays, store inventory information, and connect these diverse programs into a cohesive system.

NED-2 is a Windows-based system designed to improve project-level planning and decision making by providing useful and scientifically sound information to natural resource managers. Resources currently addressed include visual quality, ecology, forest health, timber, water, and wildlife. NED-2 integrates treatment prescriptions, growth simulation, and alternative comparisons with evaluations of multiple resources across a management unit.

2008/04/30 - LMS-2.1 includes new volume tables (Standing and Cut tables summarize by species; Volume by Size Class tables summarize by size class and species; Stand level tables are summarized per acre; Landscape level tables are expanded by acres to give stand and landscape totals), fixes cut biomass calculations in Carbon Sequstratin Table, fixed FVS crashing after landscape visualization, fixed regeneration problem with interactive growth, update to FVS variants (2008/04/04), base install now includes FFE Tools and Inventory Wizard.
