Berkeley Divinity School: Our Mission |
|
As a seminary of the Episcopal Church, Berkeley Divinity School’s mission is to inspire a “pastoral imagination” in it students that will equip them to serve as committed and imaginative clergy and lay leaders in church and society. We believe that this pastoral imagination is comprised of:
- A committed love and knowledge of God
- A mature depth of personal character
- A complex, integrated vocational ability and intelligence
Berkeley’s Episcopal identity within an ecumenical divinity school, at the heart of a great research university, uniquely calls it to this ministry of leadership formation. Its exceptional ability to fulfill this educational mission is accomplished in six essential ways:
- Daily communal worship shaped by the Anglican tradition.
- Intense theological study in a world-class educational environment.
- Focused attention to the development of spiritual and community life through active mentoring and the Annand Program in Spiritual Formation.
- Practical experience gained through supervised ministry in parishes, hospitals, prisons or other church institutions.
- Colloquia focused on stimulating a capacity for leadership.
- Continuing education to support lifelong learning and vocational development.

"Ecumenical engagement isn't an idea at Yale Divinity School: it is an everyday reality. Together we are building a composite image of the God who continually confounds and amazes us and calls us out to that other shore, beyond ourselves."
