Alfred Tisdale Appointed Director of Anglican Studies and Formation

Dean Joseph Britton announced April 15 that Alfred Tisdale has been named Director of Anglican Studies and Formation at Berkeley Divinity School. He has also been appointed by YDS Dean Harry Attridge as Lecturer in Pastoral Ministry.

Having served already as Interim Director of Studies this past year, Dr. Tisdale comes to BDS with extensive experience in the wider church. Formally a senior pastor in the Presbyterian Church, one of his first pastoral charges was actually as Vicar of St. James Episcopal Church and Pastor of Providence Presbyterian Church in the Diocese of Virginia, and he successively served congregations in Richmond, Virginia; Cranbury, NJ; Bedminster, NJ; and Basking Ridge, NJ. His experience also includes working with seminarians and graduates of the Princeton Theological Seminary, and he served on the summer faculty at The General Theological Seminary in their Center for Christian Spirituality.

Tisdale holds degrees from Wofford College, SC (B.A. in religion), Union Theological Seminary, VA (M.Div./D. Min.), and The General Theological Seminary, NY (S.T.M. in ascetical theology and spiritual direction). A noted preacher, he has also published articles on stewardship, church growth, and homiletics and is also certified as a
spiritual director.

Commenting on the appointment, Dean Britton said, "We would be hard pressed to find a teacher and pastor more widely experienced in the church than Alfred. As a coordinator of the elements of the Anglican Studies program, and as a mentor and advisor to students, Alfred will bring to Berkeley the same passion and commitment to ministry in the service of the gospel that has characterized his whole life's vocation. We look forward to the next academic year with a great sense of promise and opportunity, and to Alfred's collaboration with the faculty, staff and students all around the Quad."

"Ecumenical engagement isn't an idea at Yale Divinity School: it is an everyday reality. Together we are building a composite image of the God who continually confounds and amazes us and calls us out to that other shore, beyond ourselves."
