Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is an international community service based organization founded at Howard University in 1908 under the precepts of sisterhood and service. The Xi Omicron Chapter, chartered in 1984, is a New Haven City chapter made up of dedicated and motivated women from Yale University, Southern Connecticut State University, University of New Haven, Albertus Magnus, and Qunnipiac College.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity [ APA ]


Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African-Americans, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York in 1906 by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of Brotherhood among African descendants in this country. While stressing academic excellence among its members, Alpha also recognizes the need to help correct the educational, economic, political, and social injustices faced by African-Americans. The Zeta Chapter, made up of distinguished gentlemen from Yale University , University of New Haven , and Southern Connecticut State University, has been serving the New Haven community since 1909.

We are the Black Church at Yale, a student organized church on Yale University's campus. We are an interdenominational church that worships in the African American tradition. Our name reflects the focus and tradition that we celebrate; however, it is certainly not meant to limit our diversity. We encourage people from all nationalities, denominations, and walks of life to join us in worship. We strive to meet the needs of the active college student and we endeavor to bring all students closer to Christ through our ministries and events. During an era when Black Americans were prescribed to second-class citizenship, BSAY campaigned heavily on behalf of people of African descent at Yale. The students of BSAY demonstrated, with great pride, the accomplishments of African-Americans and the beauty and significance of our culture. We serve as an umbrella organization for social, political and cultural events in Yale’s Black community.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 13, 1913 by
twenty-two illustrious young women at Howard University. Delta's founders
sought to establish an organization dedicated to sisterhood, scholarship
and public service. The Pi Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,
Incorporated was chartered on March 24, 1984 at Yale University and
Southern Connecticut State University. Pi Alpha has since branched out to
include University of New Haven, Albertus Magnus College, and Wesleyan
University. The Pi Alpha Chapter has dedicated itself to serving the needs
of the New Haven community for 20 years.

The Ethnic Performers Guild at Yale was created in 2004 to address the lack in presence of minority performers on stage and behind the scenes of main stage theatre productions at Yale University. It seeks to create a tight-knit community of actors, singers, dancers, directors, producers, artists, technicians, and all those interested in theatre, and seeks to draw these persons from a pool of people of all ages, colors, genders, and experiences to produce entertaining, educating theatrical productions. Heritage Theatre Ensemble [ HERT ]

Founded in 1979, Heritage Theatre Ensemble (HTE) is an organization of students committed to the continuation and evolution of Black theater on Yale’s campus and in the New Haven community.

By bringing the rich voice of African-American dramatists to fruition and creating a unique atmosphere wherein students and supporters of Black theater can network and learn from one another, HTE draws on its rich legacy and strives to be teachers, creators, producers, and communicators of the African-American experience.

We are committed to putting up a minimum of two plays per year and our auxiliary programs will include scene study sessions at the Afro-American Cultural Center, production and acting workshops for both the New Haven and Yale communities, intimate talks and panels with playwrights, directors, and entertainers, performing for New Haven high schools, and various partnerships with other mentoring and tutoring organizations on campus.

Founded in 1997, Steppin’ Out is Yale’s first and only step team. In this short period of time, this organization has distinguished itself as a talented and dedicated group. Visions of Virtue [ VoV ]


Visions of Virtue is an opportunity for Christian women at Yale to nurture, support and encourage teenage ladies in New Haven and neighboring communities. Visions pairs young women (13-16) with Yale mentors for a 12-week mentorship. Each week, this Christian sisterhood meets for sessions on different topics such as sex, nutrition, education, and relationships. However, unlike existing Yale programs, Visions addresses these issues in a biblical context. Visions of Virtue is an opportunity to share a vision with little sisters in Christ, create lasting bonds with fellow Yalies and enhance personal growth.
